These beautiful lamps are the famous 5.76-inch Lucas SFT576 fog lamps, sometimes known as "Pathfinders." They are the lamps that won the Monte Carlo rally when used on Minis, provided elegant illumination on Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds and Jaguar XK 140 and 150, Mark I, Mark VIIM, VIII and IX, and dressed up the front of Austin-Healeys, Triumph TR2-3-4-5-250, MGA, MGB, Magnette, MG TD and TF, and so many other British cars. They were sold as options on many of these cars, and thousands were sold as accessory lamps in the 1950s through 1970s.
They are originals in fair-to-good condition. There are no major dents or corrosion to the casings. The chrome is shiny but it has it share of scratches and the retainers at the top of the housings are dull. The reflectors are excellent with no visible corrosion or other damage. The glass is excellent with only the odd tiny stone bruise. The fittings are all correct and in good condition. Overall, these lamps shine and look very nice from about five feet away, and they are 100 percent original and authentic, with a light patina of age that would fit well with a driver-quality car. We rank them as a 7 out of 10, with 10 being new old stock unblemished and 1 being scrap.
The bodies are chrome-plated brass, whereas all new Lucas fog and driving lamps have steel bodies. The lenses have all the correct Lucas lettering, while new ones do not, and the bodies are properly stamped LUCAS SFT576 MADE IN ENGLAND, and again, new lamps do not have these features. There are other differences, but we don't want to go on and on. These are original, and correct. They will not win a prize at the concours, but they will certainly make your British car look distinctive, and they work fine. They have early date stamps of 7-57 and 9-61 and have other 1950s features not shared with later 576 lamps. Best of all, they cost much less than the price of a pair of non-authentic new reproduction 576 lamps.
Lucas manufactured the 576 lamp from about 1952 through the 1980s, and numerous minor changes were made to the lamps during that time, including minor changes to the font of printing used on the glass, "LUCAS" on some lenses but not all, and either "MADE IN ENGLAND" or "FOREIGN GLASS" on the lenses. The chrome bodies carried a date stamp until about 1965, after which time this was omitted.
